How to Choose A Good Mexican Restaurant in Austin!
admin on June 9, 2010 in Uncategorized No Comments »Austin has its fair share of Mexican restaurants and it can be hard to figure out which are truly authentic Mexican eateries. In order to save you from all the imitation Mexican food out there, we put Guero’s, the South Congress favorite, to the test and compiled a checklist of what to look for the next time you’re craving the flavors of a true Mexican cantina.
Corn Tortillas are probably the single most important component for a Mexican restaurant and can make or break an entire restaurant’s menu. Nobody knows that better than Guero’s who would never settle for prepackaged and shipped corn tortillas. Instead, each corn tortilla is made by hand in the restaurant daily. If they don’t melt in your mouth immediately, then they weren’t made by your abuela or by the Guero’s staff.
Margarita’s are another one of Mexico’s greatest contributions to the drink menu. Always check out a restaurant’s bar menu before committing to a location and if they don’t offer their own signature mix of juices and top-shelf tequilas, just keep walking. Guero’s offers a full line of signature and traditional blends always made with fresh squeezed limejuice.
Dessert may be left for last, but they are still just as important as any other dining components at a Mexican café. While there’s a place for cheesecake and cookies, they don’t belong on this list. When asking for dessert at a Mexican restaurant, you should expect sponge cake that’s been soaked in three different milks otherwise known as tres leches and caramel covered sweet custard better known as flan. These two delicacies are of course always made homemade at Guero’s and are often hard to skip even after the biggest taco plate.
Live music is important to both the Mexican and Austin culture, so don’t go to a place without it. Luckily, Guero’s has live music Thursday through Sunday.
There you have it. Basically, if you don’t find each of these four criteria at an Austin Mexican restaurants, you know you’re not getting a truly authentic experience and you should probably just head over to Guero’s.
